As I mentioned in an earlier post (but didn’t explain…I promise it’s coming!)…we’re moving again! I wanted to make something for our new place, so I figured this might be the perfect piece to “welcome” us and others to our new home:
Here’s how I made it:
It all started at ReStore, which is where so many of my thrifty stories start out. I found this beautiful *ahem* cabinet door for $2, which is at the bottom of this picture (with some other ReStore finds)
So, I primed it:
Then I used my FREE SAMPLE (thanks Valspar!) to paint it this lovely neutral (PS – how stinkin cute is this mini-roller and paint tray?! I LOVE THEM!!)
I wanted a little depth and texture, so I used this glaze, mixed with some oops paint to put some paint on top with a dry brush:
Then I let it sit. Maybe for a few days, but really more like a few weeks. THEN the amazing Roeshel from the DIY Show-Off offered some vinyl on her site because only one person can win a Silhouette She’s so stinkin sweet!! Seriously, if you’re not following the DIY Show-Off, you must be living under a rock I asked for some white vinyl, gave her the dimensions, and when I got the vinyl, it gave me the kick in the butt I needed to re-start this project again.
This is my first vinyl project…hooray! I SO wish I had a Silhouette, but it’s just not even close to being in our budget. I just pray that one day I’ll win one of those give-aways
So, I applied the vinyl, and then put another coat of glaze mixed with some very light paint over the whole thing:
Once that dried, I did some light sanding in various parts to add some interest and dimension.
I bought some hardware off of Ebay for $1.50 a piece, which I thought was a really good deal considering how expensive hardware can be!! I measured, marked, pre-drilled holes, and then drilled the screws into the hooks:
I think it will be PERFECT for our new place, to hang my purses on, or light jackets in the spring…
Yay for thrifty and functional projects!
Let me know your thoughts…
Are you as obsessed with light gray as I am?
How do you organize your coats/hanging things without a coat closet?
