I have a confession to make. I wanted to set up a beautiful fall tablescape to post, but I wasn’t planning on eating at this table. That’s right – I was just going to set up the table, take pictures, and put it away.
What is wrong with me?
As I was setting up the table, I felt so convicted that I was setting up something beautiful just to have it be taken down in a few more minutes. My excuse?
I didn’t have time.
That should NOT be the point of blogging. So I told my husband that we were going to eating off of our china plates and drinking out of fancy glasses. He kind of gave me a look, and went on with what he was doing. When I called him in to see where we were eating, he looked at the table and said a very enthusiastic, “Cool!” (hey, I’ll take it). He stayed around to admire the little details, and honestly loved it.
Now, in all honesty, we did not have a super fancy meal (pork chops & sweet potatoes) and we did not fill those wine glasses (no wine left in our house). I was not wearing a fancy outfit (painting clothes) and we only had about 10 minutes to sit at the table until I had to leave for a church event.
But we still sat together, talked, and enjoyed our “fancy date”. I believe that it’s those little things (that I obviously don’t always do) that help to make a marriage more fun. Take TIME for each other, even if it’s just 10 minutes. Do something unexpected, like setting the table up for no special reason.
So now you can look at these pictures and KNOW that it was used, and that it wasn’t just for show. I know I feel much better about that!
We set up in my parent’s sun room, because it’s prettier than our apartment downstairs and my parents weren’t home. See? Full disclosure here
I chose not to put down a tablecloth or placemats, but we just put down a table runner instead.
I was trying to get through this holiday season without spending any money on décor, BUT I cheated. I bought this mercury glass vase when I was walking through Kohl’s the other day – I just fell in love with it! It was originally $30, marked 50% off, and then I had a 30% off coupon. So I got it for $10! I just love it, and I know I’ll be using it for my seasonal décor throughout the fall and Christmas seasons. I just filled it with various autumn fillers I’d bought last year at JoAnns and Michaels (thrifty tip: buy things like this at the end of the season when they’re practically giving them away! You’ll save so much money and be so thankful for them the next year!)
The leaves under the mercury glass vase were from the dollar store last year.
I had to go into a box and unwrap our china – we really never use it! It was fun to pull it out – I really love the simplicity of our china and I know we’ll love it for years to come!
Another thing I’m having fun with is mixing metals. It’s feeing! Napkin rings= my mom’s. Silverware= my great-grandmothers? Maybe? Chargers: $1.99 at Hobby Lobby. China: Mikasa (BB&B)
Simple, not fussy, but definitely much fancier than our typical dinners together!
I hope you enjoyed learning some new ideas about setting up a fall tablescape, but I really hope you take some time to date your husband. Do something unexpected. Make him feel important. Make time – even if it’s only 10 minutes!

The Mercury vase was such a good buy, I would of brought it too! Leave it out for New Years with some candles…I can just see it…. You are so right, even a 10 minute date can refresh a relationship. I have to remember that!

aww i love this!! do it often, because once there’s a little baby it will be scarfing down your food in two minutes and eating in shifts! or my favorite… holding a bowl of food over my nursing child.
of course, i’m sure that doesn’t last forever either!
A lovely table, and great reminder to enjoy life’s little pleasures!

Very pretty! Your china looks like mine – Lenox Continental Platinum. We chose the pattern because they are so simple and timeless (and because they are microwavable and dishwasher safe). It is the only set of dishes we registered for, and we eat off of them every day. They still look like new 7 years later! I have never regretted our choice
