Make ME over is back – and I’m so excited to talk with you about something so critical – skincare.
It’s not the most fun topic, because there’s no cute tutorials that have fun make-up colors to go with it. BUT it is SO critical! In this post, you will learn about your skin’s basic needs, as well as 5 things you need to do for your skin every day so you can have younger looking skin.
I have learned a lot about skincare over the past year, and I’m really working on taking care of my skin now so I don’t regret it years down the road.
If you think you’re too young to be thinking about taking care of your skin – think again. Did you know that you start losing collagen in your skin at age 15?? Wow I was so surprised when I heard that! So you are not too young to be thinking about taking care of your skin! While you don’t need a minimum age to take care of your skin, your skincare needs to change throughout your life. Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening with your skin in different decades:
Although your skin will change over the decades, all skin needs to be taken care of in 5 different ways every day. Yes, EVERY DAY. Most of these should be done 2 times per day – every day.
Use a high-quality cleanser 2 times a day, every day. Not negotiable! Clear all that gunk off of your skin at the beginning and end of every day!
I like to mildly exfoliate my skin 2 times a day (I have little exfoliating beads in my cleanser). But one of the most favorite things to do is use my microdermabrasion set to thoroughly exfoliate my skin 3 times per week. This reduces the size of your pores and reduces fine lines.
Toning your skin helps to restore a pH balance in your skin. This essentially helps to even out your complexion (so you don’t have pink blotchy patches). Many skin products have toner built in – make sure you read the label!
Moisture is KEY to keeping your skin youthful! Without moisturizing twice a day, your skin will develop fine lines and wrinkles. Make sure you use a moisturizer developed for your skin type – even if you have oily skin, you still need to moisturize! But you should just make sure you use a moisturizer that is made for oily/combination skin types.
This is where I have struggled for many years, but I am honestly working on getting better! Protection from the sun is a huge defense against premature aging. Make sure that you use sun protection that protects from both UVA and UVB rays!

I am well aware that not everyone will use Mary Kay’s skin care products, but if you’re not using their set, you should make sure that you are using a set from another high-quality brand.
My friend explained it to me with this illustration. If you pick and choose pieces of skincare from different sets and brands, you will not be happy with your results. It’s as if you picked and chose different ingredients for a cake without following a true recipe. Scientists have developed these skincare lines – they have formulated sets to go together for a reason. Since we’re not scientists, we shouldn’t try to act like them when we’re picking and choosing from different skincare lines. Make sense?
