Now that I’m working at home, I spend a lot of time in our home office. This is great – except for the fact that our office lacked major storage and was in our main living room downstairs. Recipe for disaster!
I’m working on redoing our little office space, and instead of showing you a true “before & after”, I’m showing you a “before & during”…because it’ll still take a little while to be totally finished!
Oh geez. Don’t judge me for that “before” picture, mmmkay? We had no filing system except for that box on the left hand side, and the little organizer that was constantly messy to the left of the computer. I had things on the floor under the desk, and while that was OK before Isaac was mobile, it just enticed him to come down there and play with all of the cords. No bueno.
Things I needed:
- an actual filing system
- more drawer space
- a system for items in the desk rather than on/under it
- a way to hide the ugly cords
- something that looked good!
I looked online at Sauder’s website and spent a lot of time going back and forth between different home office organization ideas. I ultimately chose this desk because it fit all of the criteria above – and it was an awesome price!
Sauder prides itself on giving good quality furniture a low price tag. One of the ways they do that is to deliver their furniture as ready-to-assemble. We got the desk delivered to our house and got to work assembling it! I say we, but I really mean “he” – my husband was pretty excited to “build” the desk, and he wanted to do it himself.
PS- look at Isaac. He’s like, “Guys? Really” More furniture??” Haha!!
This desk is HEAVY. 123 pounds to be exact. I have no worries about the quality either – this thing is solid!
It took my husband two nights to put it together – and then we were ready to set it up in the new space!
OK – so how did I do with my original requirements?
Filing system? Check:
More drawer space? Check. A system for things inside the desk? Check. I used thrift store organizers on the left, and an old silverware organizer on the right:
A way to hide the cords? Check. Something that looks good? Check, check, check!!
This desk honestly looks a lot more attractive than I imagined it would in this space:
While I love how the desk works for this space, I’ve learned that the best way to organize in a small space is to build up. We still have a total blank slate on top of the desk, so I’m planning on using that wall space to really make the most of this little area:
It’s still a work in progress, but The Nester says, “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.” Our imperfect little office space is looking more beautiful to me every day!
