Now that the boxes are 80% unpacked, I’m finding myself staring at lots of blank walls and trying to find inspiration. Since we have plaster walls, I want to make sure I really like whatever I hang so we don’t have to repair the walls that we just spent SO much time fixing!
As a reminder, here is what the family room looked like when we bought the house:
Remember what the flooring looked like when we tore up the carpets??
These are NOT “after” shots – because it’s not decorated yet! But here’s what it looks like currently:
We are in LOVE with the flooring, and so glad we made the investment to get them refinished before we moved in!
I want to accent this room with lots of graphic patterns in all shades of BLUE. Here’s my inspiration board right now:
I want to modernize all of that wood trim, so bringing in some modern graphic prints and color will help to make the room feel updated.

What do you think?? I am SO open to ideas/suggestions – this is such a work in progress, and I can’t wait to update all of you as it comes along!

Oh but you have great stuff to work with! I love the direction you are going – your inspiration board is great. And I will give you 2 thumbs ups on getting those floors refinished instead of covering them with new carpet! You will never regret that decision!

Also, keep in mind 3M Command strips….no holes in the walls!!!

I love your inspiration board! How did you do that? 🙂 I love that quatrefoil pattern so much. I just bought a mid century china cabinet with matching dining table and chairs on Craig’s List. What makes them special? They have that quatrefoil pattern carved in them!

This is the link so you can see them. I was trying to do some research on the pieces and let me tell you, they are hard find! I just lucked into them. I’m still on the search for the matching buffet or even the dresser;-) I’m going for a mid century modern look downstairs using turquoise and taupe (kind of a coffee with cream color called Hopsack from Valspar). But I also want to change it up with some pops of color like yellow or hot pink;-)
I am uber-jealous of your floors! When we first moved in we wanted to pull out the carpet and install some new wood laminate floors. Of course other things come up when buying a new home and now it’s on the wait and see list. At least the carpets were brand new, so we can get some use out of them and dirty them up a bit;-)
I’m looking forward to more of your decorating posts! Make sure you put those feet up though and take as many naps as you can;-)

those floors! omg those floors! they’re GORGEOUS!
I like your mood board for the room, too – can’t wait to see it come together!
PS – I love how your hutch/cabinet in the corner kind of mimics your window molding at the top 🙂

We live in a house built in 1917 and also have lots of beautiful dark wood trim. We’ve lived in the house six years and have not painted the family room. The current wall color is a butter cream shade, but I’m wanting to change it. We don’t want to paint the wood trim. What shade is in your family room?
