These tips to make a house a home will help to take your space from builder-grade to character-filled with just a little bit of creative thinking!
One of the biggest questions I get it how people can add some personality to their homes. I’ve heard many people tell me that they start trying to decorate, and they get stuck along the way, trying to figure out how exactly make a house a home. Here are some of my greatest tips, and examples of how we’ve used these suggestions in our own home!
Simple tips to make a house a home
Consider your walls
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – don’t forget the actual WALLS when you’re looking to make your home a cozy space. Many people worry about finding the right decorations for their walls, but try to consider the actual walls themselves. Adding architectural elements like board & batten, brick veneer, shiplap, or bead board can make such a great impact. If you do these projects yourself, they don’t have to cost a fortune either! These wall treatments go a LONG way when you’re trying to add character to your home.
Make it cozy with the right furniture
You spend a LOT of time using your furniture, so it’s really important that it’s perfect for your space. I recently learned about a super smart company called CORT. They have furniture outlets around the United States. This is a great option to purchase furniture that’s been gently used for a fraction of the cost. BUT they don’t just have furniture (like I originally thought). They also have things like rugs, wall art, and even TVs! Check out the inventory at a CORT Furniture Outlet in your area.
CORT also has a furniture rental service and I think it’s a brilliant idea! If you’re considering a certain layout or piece of furniture, but aren’t ready to commit to such a large purchase without living with it first, then this might be a great option for you! Loved this bed I found on their site:
Add things that are meaningful
Of course, when you’re adding personality to a space, make sure you add things that YOU love. You can do this in many ways! Here’s some of my favorites:
- family pictures in a gallery wall (or on picture frame ledges like we did here)
- a shadowbox of baby items in your child’s room
- A framed picture of the place you got married (or a wedding picture of course!)
- A gallery wall of pictures from special places you’ve traveled
- check out custom house watercolors on Etsy for a fun personal touch
Don’t forget the ceiling
Finally, another way to make a house a home is to consider your ceiling. It’s really the fifth wall! Most people don’t do anything with their ceiling, but I think it adds so much character and warmth to put wood planks up there! I’ve even seen some people do peel & stick wallpaper on their ceiling and it’s been beautiful too.
I hope this helps you take your house from builder grade and bland to character filled and home-y. Make sure you check out the CORT Blog to help you with this process as well – I like this article on how to make a gallery wall that will transform your living space!
