Well I think this post might finally prove my addiction for spray paint, as well as quick & cheap make-overs! Here’s what happened in about 30 minutes this weekend:
I’ve had these flats around for a few years now…got them for under $10, and they used to be cute. But I’ve worn them so much now, that they were just not wearable for work anymore because they were so beat up.
I was debating whether or not to throw them away, and I decided to whip out a can of my glossy black Krylon spray paint and try to spray paint them. I figure if it didn’t work – it wasn’t a big deal…I was going to throw them out anyway!
Here’s what I did:
This helps get a smoother surface for the paint.
This left me with a little “nub” – but that will be taken care of later in the process
I used plastic bags for this step
I am SO impatient – waiting the right amount of time to let them dry is the hardest part for me!
I should invest in Velcro stock…I must have bought thousands of dollars worth of Velcro so far in my 4 years of teaching! I use this stuff ALL the time!
Get creative with this! I played it safe, but I wanted to make something that I knew I would wear often. The beauty of the Velcro is that you can interchange your shoe “toppers” as often as you’d like! I made my flowers using this tutorial (like I did for this pillow), but with some lace instead of felt.
And – you’re done!
The whole project took me about a half hour (because of the waiting time between coats of spray paint) – and didn’t cost me a dime because I had everything on hand! This kind of project is my most favorite 🙂
So tell me – have YOU ever spray-painted your shoes?! Are you tempted to try it now?

So cute!! They turned out great!! You are so darn creative, I would have never thought to spray paint my shoes!! Definitely gonna keep this in mind the next time I’m about to throw a pair in the trash!!
Meeha says
Awesome!!! I so wanna do that! What kind of spray paint did you use, all purpose?
Meeha says
Thank you for the info, I’ll try something similar 🙂

I was just shoe shopping online last night and thought…I could spray paint some shoes and save big dollars! Way go to!

How clever! I’ve never thought of spray painting your shoes! I decoupage fabric to my daughter’s plain tennies sometimes, but it didn’t work on my flat! I wish I’d tried spray paint instead!

Seriously?! What a great idea! I’m totally doing this! 🙂

What a great idea! I just bought some black shoes for my daughter that have a little scuff on them. If it doesn’t come out with nail polish remover, I might try this. Thanks so much for sharing.:)

cute idea and I love the fact that they are already broken in! I should do this to a pair of my old beat up pairs of shoes.

You are so fun! I love these! I might try it because I have a million pairs of flats that I NEVER wear anymore (ever since I married someone who is 6’4″!) so if I ruined them it wouldn’t matter! So cute! Did you seal them with anything? You’ll have to let us know how they hold up or if they crack!

Have you worn these shoes often? Does the paint crack? I love this idea – thanks for sharing – I am off to my shoe supply to try this!

So uncanny! I had just done the same exact thing to an old pair of beat up silver flats that I absolutely adore and hated to part with. Only wish I had thought to photograph mine for the Before and After shots! Darn it. Maybe next time. Definitely inspired by your post to try it again on some other old pairs! Thanks for the contagious inspiration!

When I was a teenager — uh…long ago and in a land far, far away — let’s just say there was a thing called the British Invasion going on…there was ‘shoe paint’.
It came in bottles like liquid shoe polish with its own fuzzy brush thing. I painted my shoes all the time, because I had ‘hard-to-fit’ feet. My shoes cost an arm and a leg, and though I had tons of shoes, this was a way that those that fit best could be used a lot longer. After all, to dance to the Beatles and Herman’s Hermits all night long, one had to have comfy shoes that were the epitome of cool.

Pinned these & am going to try painting some old shoes today… hopefully they’ll turn out as cute as yours! Thanks for the idea! xo

I painted my shoes green! I did chalkboard paint so it would “stick” better. Looks good, will see how the paint holds up when I actually wear them =)

Very cute! They turned out great, and I love the interchangeable topper idea!

OMG, I just LOVE this idea! Please share whether you’ve worn these shoes and have they held up okay? I saw some awesome barely used boots at the consignment shop recently, thought, hmmm, if only they were a different color!

I really want to try this 🙂 I have a couple of pairs that need some making over. My big question is did the scuff marks show in the finished shoe? I can’t really tell from the pictures. Thank you for sharing your genius.
